Dakota Black popcorn is one of the earliest-maturing popcorns available commercially, and grows well dry farmed in the Pacific Northwest. David Podoll of Prairie Road Organic Seed bred the modern variety in the 1980’s for black kernels, larger ear size, and stand-ability, and the Podolls have pledged the variety to the Open Source Seed Initiative. The popped kernels are white-colored with a black hull, and have a rich, nutty flavor. When milled, it also produces a hearty cornmeal.
