INTRODUCTION TO SOIL ARTICLES
The articles in the soil sections will offer two potential paths for assessing your soil: a qualitative sensory approach (Article 3A) and a quantitative calculation approach (Article 3B). Most growers will find value in both. By the end of this section, you will be able to:
- Describe the physical and biological characteristics of your soil at multiple depths using your senses to make observations.
- Assess your soil’s water holding capacity and estimate how much it shares with plants
- Connect your soil observations and AWHC estimates to specific practice areas most likely to improve water resilience on your farm, and
- Identify one or two starting points that are realistic given your current context.
